David MacNeal

Beast Calendar spun from a half-drunk escapade in a Mexican port city after Beast model David MacNeal, 23, scaled a mini Mayan pyramid shirtless. A tourist crowd impulsively ogled and gagged as they took pictures of the posing fur ball, and thus inspired a 12-month tribute to hairy men. Regardless of this country’s economic strife, he managed to pull these pages together while pinching a dime. All thanks, of course, goes to the family and friends believing this could work. MacNeal is a freelance journalist and is currently working on a satirical sci-fi novel.

John DuBois

Born in the San Francisco Bay Area, Beast Calendar photographer John DuBois, 22, developed his skills in the journalism realm. Henri Cartier-Bresson, father of photojournalism, described the “decisive moment” as capturing the significance and proper expression of an event—and DuBois has never failed to find it. As a freelance photographer, and recent graduate of Cal State Northridge, he has shot weddings, skateboarding, and numerous events; and he plans on traveling and pursuing new projects of his own. His photos have been published by the Associated Press, and featured in Beer magazine.

Tara Reyes

Conceptualizing a statue while staring at a marble block may be easier than trimming the Beast . . . Michelangelo never combed through man hair for inspiration. But Beast Calendar make-up artist Tara Reyes, 23, has done just that. An innovative visual designer and diligent cosmetologist, her talent and patience (like stringing ornaments to individual follicles) outweigh many of those in her profession. Her portfolio includes the film Mercy (2009), HBO series Interiormenté, and the Fabrik Fashion Show. See more at: tarabreyes.com

Brian Gurevich

The only way for Beast Calendar to ingrain chic and class into its pages was by constructing sleek, tantalizing typography and a layout that complimented the photos. Graphic designer Brian Gurevich, 23, tossed around and discarded many ideas through trial and error—going as far as composing a cover title of individual hairs. The result of his labor is the calendar’s fluid month-to-month transition, and contemporary finish. He plans on pursuing multiple facets of graphic design.
